Definition

MST-CAN® is a home-based voluntary therapeutic intervention that has a strong commitment to engaging the whole family in the program.

The goals of MST-CAN® include keeping families together, ensuring that children are safe, preventing abuse and neglect, reducing mental health difficulties, and increasing natural social supports for the family.

In addition, MST-CAN® provides treatment to improve mental health functioning, including addressing trauma symptoms, and to decrease the misuse of substances.

MST-CAN® is an evidence-based model (EBM) that targets families where there has been a substantiated ROSH report of physical abuse and/or neglect of a child aged six – 17 years within the past 180 days. It is a treatment for serious, high risk and complex cases. MST-CAN® addresses the multiple factors known to be related to physical abuse and/or neglect across the key settings, or systems, within which the family is embedded. MST-CAN® strives to promote behavioural change in the family’s natural environment, using the strengths of each system (e.g. family, peers, school, neighbourhood, kinship, support networks) to facilitate change.

Functional Family Therapy – Child Welfare (FFT-CW®) is a home-based treatment model for families with substantiated physical abuse and/or neglect of a child or young person aged between 0 and 17 years by providing a family therapy-focused model for at-risk families. FFT-CW® addresses the underlying trauma that results in harm to children, young people and families.

The FFT-CW® model

  • addresses child abuse and neglect, substance abuse, mental illness, school difficulties, and history of out-of-home care or involvement with the NSW child protection system
  • is focused on engaging with the family’s broader social environment
  • delivers a comprehensive service to all family members, after assessing the abuse dynamics within the family
  • develops each family’s social and community networks which are considered a central component of the service response.
