Definition

In order to ensure that social housing is directed towards those who need it most, the eligibility criteria focus on aiding individuals with low income requiring support for independent living and those facing challenges in securing affordable housing in the private market that meets their needs. Social housing providers taking part in the program will evaluate eligibility and prioritise assistance for clients seeking social housing. 

To qualify for social housing, clients must:

  • Verify their identity.
  • Reside in New South Wales (NSW).
  • Be a citizen or hold permanent residency in Australia.
  • Have a household income within the specified limits.
  • Not possess assets or property that could reasonably address their housing needs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain a successful tenancy, either independently or with appropriate support.
  • Repay any outstanding debts to a social housing provider if applicable.
  • Generally, be at least 18 years old.
