    Classification

The remoteness data standard defines a common approach to regional, rural and remote (RRR) data within the NSW Department of Education and between the department and external parties. Application of the remoteness data standard extends to research procured by the department.

The Remoteness Standard is based on the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). It is a measure to reflect the location of people and communities and their relative geographic access to services. It is released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and is updated approximately once every five years in line with the Census to account for growth and change in Australia’s population, economy and infrastructure.

The ASGS divides Australia and the states and territories into 5 classes of remoteness on the basis of their relative access to services. These Remoteness Areas are Major Cities of Australia, Inner Regional Australia, Outer Regional Australia, Remote Australia, and Very Remote Australia.
