Definition

This refers to the total number of Aboriginal children and young people in out-of-home care (OOHC), during the reporting period.


The Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child or young person placement principle in the child and young persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 outlines a preference for the placement of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child or young person with family or other Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

The Annual Statistical Report disaggregates by District, Age, Placement type, Care arrangement and Care category. 

Comments

Data ageing:

  • Data ageing is two months, unless otherwise indicated. Therefore, the data for this indicator will be available two months after the end of the month in which the data first becomes available.

Data changes:

  • In 2017-18 changes were made to OOHC counting rules to better align those with national reporting and to also better reflect the legal status of clients in OOHC. The result as at 30 June 2018 is not directly comparable to historic data previously published. When adjusted to make them comparable, there was a decrease of 27.3% in the number of children and young people in OOHC, compared to 30 June 2017. Compared to 30 June 2016, there was a decrease of 44.5% in the number of children and young people in OOHC as at 30 June 2018.
  • From 2022-23, District of Case Management Responsibility has replaced District for disaggregation..

Data limitations:
