Definition

A code set representing standardised regional areas of Australia. The Statistical areas level 4 (SA4s) are specifically designed for the output of ABS Labour Force Survey data and therefore have population limits imposed by the Labour Force Survey sample. These areas represent labour markets or groups of labour markets within each State and Territory.

Description

SA4s are identified by a 3-digit hierarchical code. This comprises a 1-digit State or Territory identifier, which precedes a 2-digit SA4 identifier, unique within each State and Territory.

Comments

There are 107 SA4 regions covering the whole of Australia without gaps or overlaps. These include 18 non-spatial SA4 special purpose codes comprising Migratory–Offshore–Shipping and No Usual Address codes for each State and Territory.

The Other Territories of Jervis Bay, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island and Norfolk Island are together represented by a single SA4 in the 2016 ASGS.
